In case any of you are wondering whatever happened to this project or if it ever started, I thought I’d give a quick update on where we are in the process. No, unfortunately we haven’t started construction on the project yet. Yes, we are still planning to get going as soon as HUD and the powers that be in D.C. approve the final version of our proposed scope of work. To catch up those of you who weren’t readers of this blog a few months back, the project I am referring to is a HUD-funded green retrofit to a 78 unit senior complex in the Cottage area. The basic scope of work is comprised of all new kitchens using environmentally friendly materials and methods, all new high energy efficient HVAC systems, lighting and windows, along with various green and energy efficient upgrades to the facility. The funds are coming in the form of a competitive stimulus grant awarded by HUD to approximately 300 facilities nationwide. A total of $250 million in grants and loans to eligible projects for the completion of green retrofits that improve the energy and water efficiency of the property, improve resident health, and benefit the environment.
We have been through numerous rounds of revisions to our green scope of work with HUD. Contrary to what many may believe, they are taking great care as to how the funds from the stimulus are going to be spent, at least in the case of this program. I’ve had the privelege of working on a team with Michael Malinowski and his staff at Applied Architecture in Sacramento. Michael has a record of stewardship of historic retrofit projects like the Globe Mills as well as a long standing leadership role in the design and architectural community in Sacramento. www.appliedarts.net
As promised I will post further updates on this site. Hopefully the next installment will be to announce we have started construction!
